New York in the northeastern United States, is the 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated U.S. state with a population exceeding twenty million.
It is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east.
The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, and has as an international border with Canadian provinces Quebec (to the north), and Ontario (to the northwest).
The southern part of the state comprises Long Island and a number of smaller associated islands, as well as New York City and the lower Hudson River Valley.
Upstate New York comprises several ranges of the wider Appalachian Mountains, including the Allegheny Plateau and Catskills along New York's Southern Tier, and the Adirondack Mountains, Thousand Islands archipelago, and Saint Lawrence Seaway in the Northeastern lobe of the state.
Western New York is considered part of the Great Lakes Region and straddles Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
In between is Niagara Falls. In the central part of the state are the Finger Lakes.
